It's really, really, really firm, and I am thinking it might be making my sleep suboptimal. I bought a used Kura bed and went to the hardware store and got a 6mm mdf and some 45x45mm beams. The hardware store helped me cut up the mdf in the same size as the panels around the top bed. Also had to cut the beams to same size as top bed and mill a groove in to the beams around the bottom bed in order to fit the new mdf panels. Painted all pine parts as well as one side of the new mdf panels white. Mounted wallpaper (with standard wallpaper glue) on the blue panels as well as on the unpainted mdf. When mounting the bed I simply added my extra beams and mdf panels and secured them with wood screws. To get a proper bed on the bottom I placed a Sultan Lade slatted bed base on top of two beams. See more of the Kura bunk bed. Safety note on mattresses: Susie’s hack placed the bottom mattress on a Sultan Lade slatted base on top of 2 beams, which is an excellent move. If you’re thinking of skipping this vital step, don’t! An Ikea employee mentioned to an IKEAHackers’ reader that the bottom mattress should not be placed directly on the floor, as it is a health hazard.
Any standard (non organic) mattress should never be flat on the floor because the lack of air makes chemical vapors build up and escape through the top of the mattress, creating a health hazard for the person sleeping on it. A bunky board should do the trick to lift the mattress and provide the needed air flow. One can never have too much storage! I’ve had my eye on the IKEA MALM full-sized bedframe & matching nightstands for awhile now. Then I discovered the SULTAN ALSARP ‘boxspring’ w/ storage & how it would be great to utilize ALL the space under the mattress. I knew that the full-sized Sultan Alsarp was L: 74 3/8 ” x W: 52 3/4 ” x H: 11 3/4 “, & based on the Malm measurements for Mattress L: 74 3/8 ” x Mattress W: 53 1/8 ” & Footboard H: 11 3/4 “, it looked like it would fit. I just needed to go to IKEA & take a peek under the Malm mattress to see how it was held together & what, if anything, could possibly obstruct the Sultan Alsarp from slipping into the Malm bedframe.
When I told the IKEA employee in the bedroom department what I was doing, he said it wouldn’t work. In the picture, you'll see the cover is a bit dusty, but that's just from the move. The cover has been beneath a foam mattress the whole time we've had it. This bed is $299 new at IKEA, disassembled. The mattress is a bit firm for our taste, which is why we had a foam mattress on it, but it's a large bed and with the foam mattress it was incredibly comfortable for us. For people who like firm mattresses, this might be perfect for you. We can also add in the memory foam mattress for an additional $75. Please let us know before hand if you'd be interested in the additional mattress as we don't have it at the same apartment as the futon.
