Their range of external doors are economical and environmentally-sound; packing an inexpensive, low-density and moisture-resistant core in thin sheets of higher-quality oak. They can be stained or painted to produce the desired finish. Oak doors, by contrast, are made from solid oak all the way through. Single pieces of wood, however, are liable to change their shape over time, as they absorb and release moisture. To avoid this, Jeld Wen use laminated designs. This works by combining several sheets of oak – typically two on either side of a series of solid-oak planks forming the core. In this way, solid-oak doors can avoid warping in the same way that a veneered door does – but they’re denser, and offer a reassuring weight when they’re opened and closed. What’s more, solid-oak doors, being denser, will offer superior thermal efficiency – making them ideal for external doors which will last the distance, and resist the warping that can cause draughts.
