FAME (Fatty Acid Methyl Esters) biodiesel is a renewable alternative fuel produced from vegetable oils, animal fats, or waste cooking oils through the process of transesterification. FAME can be used as a substitute for mineral diesel and gas oil in on-road and off-road vehicles and static engines. It is created by reacting high molecular weight oils and fats with short chain alcohol in the presence of a catalyst, usually potassium hydroxide, to produce lower molecular weight esters.FAME biodiesel can be produced from a variety of oils and fats, including used cooking oils, animal fats/tallow, soya oil, rapeseed oil, sunflower oil, palm oil, and waste cooking oils. The production process involves splitting the alkoxy groups from the glyceryl backbone of the triglyceride (oil/fat) and reacting it with alcohol to produce lower molecular weight esters (FAME) and liberate glycerol as a by-product
.FAME biodiesel has some disadvantages, such as its hygroscopic nature, which means it can absorb more moisture than petroleum-derived diesel and hold it in suspension in the fuel
. This can lead to contamination problems, as water can provide conditions suitable for microbial growth and lead to diesel bugs, moulds, yeasts, and bacteria spreading throughout the fuel

To prevent FAME fuel contamination, it is recommended to get it checked by professionals on a regular basis and to check it yourself every few months for signs of contamination, such as issues with your equipment or engine when you have just topped up the fuel, cracks and signs of erosion on the fuel tank, or visible water droplets in the oil tank
