Why would a woman be in a barbershop? Why was she wearing that uniform? Why was she cutting men’s hair? Betty remembers inviting him inside. “You’re a barber?” the boy asked, as she recalls. “Well, you’ll never cut my hair.” Betty laughs now, but the story was a sign of the times when it happened in the early 1960s. Cutting a man’s hair in an all-male barbershop was not a woman’s job. Only men did that kind of work — unless you walked into Milan’s Barbershop on Halsted Street in East Orange. That’s where you saw Betty, third chair from the window. The barbershop, now called Brown Barber Shop, hasn’t changed much in the past 50 years.

Betty, 72, has been lining up in the same spot and snipping away with the same skill and patience that won over bull-headed men. She remembers their resentment, their attitudes. Men would not budge from their seats, even with the owner urging them to give her a shot. The East Orange resident cut very few heads the first three years and made little money after she started Aug. 3, 1960. “Many days I had to sit and wait," she said. “It wasn’t a comfortable feeling." Betty thought about quitting, but said things got better when men saw what she could do. Now you can’t get them out of her chair. “If she’s not here, I won’t get a haircut," said Charles Sheffield, who drives from Woodbridge. This is quite the compliment from someone who was once among the ranks of naysayers. John Brown knew better. He recognized her talent the first time she cut his hair in 1963. Betty’s trademark, he says, is working the shears, the delicate tool many people mistakenly call scissors.

“Most barbers use clippers and the blades," Brown said. “She’s one of the few barbers who use the shears and comb for layered cuts." When Brown bought the shop in 1975, he asked Betty if she would keep working in this nostalgic barber haven, where the air is laced with the smell of hair tonic and talcum powder. There’s a sense of neatness and cleanliness here. Barbers wash their tools in a sink, then hang electric clippers to dangle from hooks. If someone is not busy, hair is swept from the black-and-white checkered floor. This place has value everywhere you look. There are no bars on the window to hide classic Belmont and Koken barber chairs. The only sign of wear is the tattered rustic leather seats patched with tape where they have cracked. Things may be old, but they work. The antique register still makes change; the blue-and-white Pepsi-Cola machine has cold soda. On the back wall hangs a pay phone, and it rings when someone calls. The atmosphere is not loud or offensive.

Parents bring their kids, women feel at home. There’s wholesome discussion, some of it heated. Otherwise it wouldn’t be a barbershop, right? “Me and Betty would be holding our own against the men when it came to women’s issues," said Anita Mack of Montclair. Customers like Mack have come and gone, but they look up to Betty. She’s a piece of history, a model of friendship and character. They say she has carried herself as a lady and never compromised her standards. It’s a no-no to think you can be cute and call her baby, honey or sugar. “Call me Ms. Betty, Ms. McDuffie or Betty," she said. If you want a hug, Betty has an answer for that, too. On the job she’s always been a professional, but she does have a fun side and can joke with the best of them. “Okay, Karim," she said the other day. “Even though you had such a difficult haircut, I’m glad I could be of service to you today." Everybody in the shop fell out laughing. Karim cracked up, too.

He has a bald head. Cutting hair is an art for Betty, a craft inspired from watching her aunt who owned a beauty salon in Cairo, Ga. Betty takes her time, pays attention to detail so she can deliver a quality cut. “If you like it, tell others,’’ she said. “If you don’t, tell me. I’m here to please, not to tease." And when she’s done, not too many have to look in the mirror. She’s earned that respect the hard way, even from one of her youngest critics. That shorty staring at her in the window? “He went on to become one of my regular customers," Betty said. Betty had been a part-timer in recent years, cutting back on her hours year by year. Until Friday — her last day. Betty has hung up her shears.
