INTRO - RECOUNT THE TIME

(1)Russia is a country that accumulates a great number of stereotypes of its citizens and its government. In this video, I’m going to present three most prominent prejudices that are most likely to pop up in your mind if you talk about Russia.

(2)We will find out how movies create a stereotype of Russian women being materialistic and always wearing the most expensive and ostentatious clothes to show the world that they are rich and Russian men, drinking vodka and only vodka, because it’s a permanent winter there. Also, I will try to explain a huge gap between social layers, or, how they say, why there is no middle class in Russia.

(3)Afterwards, you will be able to decide for yourself, whether these stereotypes are just myths promoted by the US and Europe or the reality Russia lives in. So, let’s start, or, how Russians would say, поехали!

TORRY

https://vm.tiktok.com/ZSeFBEard

In this video Tory represents a well known stereotype of Russian women. As a general rule, Europeans and Americans are prone to think of Russian women as of uneducated and dependent on their husbands' females. The way their husbands show their love is filling their wives with expensive presents. The higher price their gifts cost, the more they love them. Moreover, the more luxurious clothes and accessories you wear, the more superior you are. There is a huge income gap that divides Russian society into 2 big categories: super rich and super poor people. There is almost no middle class in Russia, which nudges people to show off their wealth by wearing the most obvious and the most famous brands. Therefore, clothes in Russia represent an attributive function, classifying you as either an affluent or an indigent person.

5:01-5:14 - girl in fur coat

Here we can see an American couple arriving in Moscow, where they encounter a girl who is an iconic illustration of a super trivial “russian women” stereotype. She is wearing a fur coat and carrying LV bags, saying “I have already bribed everyone, I’m not going to pay more!”

MACMAFIA 1 (12 sec)

27:26 - 27.38

Elena is wearing a fur coat, although it’s not cold outside: we see the sun shining and the grass being still green. Why? Because Russian women always wear fur coats.

43.20-43.42

Here we observe a Russian spy, who speaks russian; and the author leaves us to wonder what he said because there are no subtitles. But how we could’ve found out he was Russian if we hadn’t heard him speaking Russian? Of course, it is clear by The Ushanka again. Moreover, there is one more thing the camera puts the stress on and helps us to reveal he’s nationality - a gold watch. Again, we notice the Russians’ craving for wealth and - even more importantly - showing this wealth off.

THE AMERICANS (25 sec)

Look at the colour palette of the clothes that a russian spy is wearing: it’s purple. In psychology, shades of purple are a manifestation of power and wealths. By the way, the girl who is a russian spy, is the only one character who is wearing an eye-catching colour. Thus, we realise she is different from the others through her costume, and there is some kind of power concentrated in her hands.

RUSSIAN DOLL (14 sec)

4:51-5:58

The girl with a russian name - Nadia - is the only one person in the room who has colourful elements of the outfit. All her colleagues are wearing casual shirts, while Nadia is allowed to neglect the etiquette at work for some reason.

и здесь добавить *probably because she is Russian на картинку когда я договорю voice over

The protagonist of this music clip is wearing an Ushanka - a Russian traditional fur hat. We can tell that this girl is russian because in every shot filmed outside she appears in warmest clothes. This also stresses her country of origin - the country where it snows every single winter and the temperature drops dramatically below zero.

‘In Russia they always drink vodka”

MACMAFIA 2 (9 sec)

10:03-10:06

5:34

This russian man is represented as a vulgar drunkard, even though he is wealthy and powerful. He brings a bottle of vodka with him everywhere.

HOUSE OF CARDS (18 sec)

26:54 - 27:06

27:29 - 27:35

And here… vodka again! Character of the Russian president brought the best and the most expensive vodka as a gift for Americans. Why didn’t he bring decent whiskey or wine? Because there the stereotype appears again - russian people drink vodka and only vodka.

ПЕРЕБИВКА Мультяшная картинка на которой написано:

CHERNOBYL

05:45-07:20 (9 sec)

Russia is eclectic. Look at these doctors and the building they work in. It’s dark, the walls are shabby, people seem to be extremely poor.

07:20-09:30 (12 sec)

However, here goes the following scene - and we are shown a building where the government works. It is decorated luxuriously, and we would never say that outside of the building there is poverty and suffering.

FAMILY GUY -

14:15-14:28 (17 sec)

The “diversity” of Russian people occurs even in the Family guy series. Peter went on a trip to Moscow, where he noticed, as we can see, either super pretty or poor and ugly women. There is nothing between these two extremes: no “middle class” even in beauty standards.

ENDING

Now, we have a full picture of the most popular stereotypes whirling around Russia. As a person who used to live there and goes there to celebrate New Year (Russians don’t celebrate Christmas, one more weird thing, I know), I can assure you that the stereotypes we discussed in this video are actually closely connected to reality. Obviously, movies are prone to exaggerate everything they illustrate. However, prejudices do not appear out of nowhere, they always have a ground to be based on.
