The Gray Jedi Way

The Gray Jedi Way

Pi
Through meditation,
I gain my mind clear and open,
so that I shall be guided by the Force:

Meditation is the first, fundamental passage for any philosophy, discipline or religion aiming harmony with the self and the cosmos. In particular, trascendental meditation is a powerful mind-clearing technique, really useful in order to have the Jedi's mind open to the Force and free from prejudices, preconceptions and superstitions. Indeed, Lucretius wrote: «Quare religio pedibus subiecta vicissim obteritur nos exaequat victoria caelo», underlining the necessity to overcome the ideas of culture and moral as static and untouchable in order to gain freedom.

I shall feel balance flowing through all
and harmony permeating the Universe ·

As previously written, meditation is really helpful when it comes to feel in harmony with all things and perceive the balance in nature (in and out of your body) between life and death, homeostasis and transistasis, construction and destruction, chaos and order, light and darkness. The contemplation of this equilibrium brings to beatitude.

I shall connect with the world that surrounds me
in order to find the Cosmic Force,
which gives me knowledge and power ·

Connection with the world can be intended as the Spinozian second-type knowledge (which increases power), as the Epicurean conception of scientific investigation (which takes to ἀταραξία), but also as Leopardi's contemplation of nature, similarly to the mystical sense of connection, involvement and unity with the living cosmos, typical of English pantheist poets (Coleridge, Wordsworth...).

In the Jedi view, this process constitutes the encounter with the Cosmic Force, the side of the Force corresponding to the divine element in Cusano's complicatio, that is the relationship between God and world which can be summarised in the panentheistic sentence «All things are in God», that becomes, in the Jedi view: «All things are in the Force».

I shall listen to the primordial voice of my soul
in order to find the Living Force,
which gives me the strength to act
and the patience to see.

Differently from what most religions do, the Jedi do not rely on revelations, prophecies or ancient testaments: Jedi beliefs appeal to the purest inner voice of human conscience and soul, a sort of Socratic Δαίμων. Seeking deeply through this, the Jedi can experience the Living Force, an entity similar to the Ātman of the Vedanta culture, especially when related to the Cosmic Force as Brāhman: it is the individual expression of the divine element, following Cusano's explicatio («God is in all things»), the foundation of everyone's experience of reality, the essence of every singularity, like Spinoza's conatus living «sub specie aeternitatis».

Guided by the Force,
my feelings shall be focused
through power and patience,
my passions shall become actions
through knowledge and strength,
and through focus and action
I shall bring peace and harmony to the world
and serenity and balance to my soul ·

Guided by the Force, the Jedi are able to transform the impulses coming both from the outside and from the inside, so that each of them, also the ones generally marked as negative, becomes an instrument for the Jedi to recognise and bring balance. This way, the Jedi manages to fulfill his/her will by carrying balance and equilibrium with every action, and reaches serenity by being in harmony with the flowing of the events.

I shall be one with the Force
and the Force shall free me.

Now you are free from the pain coming both from passivity and from the resistance against the unstoppable flowing of events: you shall live in harmony even in darkness, death, destruction and chaos, always bringing balance with you. Each of your steps, moves and breaths shall be the step, the move and the breath of the Force, as your will and your actions shall be in full consonance with it.
