Hold up your hand. Five fingers, yes? Observe that there are 4 spaces in between.
4 fingers, 3 spaces; 3 fingers, 2 spaces; 2 fingers, 1. See the pattern? The no. of objects is 1 more than the no. of spaces. Or, the no. of objects minus 1 gives you the no. of spaces.
