There is a moment when you are a teenage girl when you don't belong to anybody. You aren't really a daughter. You aren't anyone's partner. You aren't related to anyone at all.

I fell madly in love with everything. Everything made me excited. Drinking coffee out of a cracked cup with a dark rose on it. The covers of paperbacks in bookstore windows. The smell of skunk as I walked along the train tracks. A row of plastic horses on windowsill The gold sangbirds on the wallpaper in a motel room. The stack of television monitors in the store window, each playing different television show. A trumpet player in the subway.

"Is it a sin to find beauty in the darkness?

To watch as the night sky comes alive with the eyes of the gods

To listen as the forest whispers centuries old secrets

To find solace as shadows dance the same dance they have for eons

Powerful things lurk in the

darknesz and it is a sin to forget them."
