1. Newly-inducted Union Ministers took charge of their offices on 08 Jul. 43 ministers were sworn in to the Union Council of Ministers. They included 15 Cabinet Ministers & 28 Ministers of State.

2. India’s cumulative COVID Vaccination Coverage has reached nearly 37 crore & National COVID-19 recovery rate stands at 97.18%. The Union Health Ministry said.

3. The Union Cabinet has decided to make amendments to the Coconut Development Board Act, 1979 to make it more efficient to carry out the activities of farming and production of coconut.

4. Union Cabinet has 

 approved the proposal of allowing the Agriculture Produce Market Committees, APMCs to use the one lakh rupees Agriculture Infrastructure Fund which has been announced as part of the Atmanirbhar Bharat Package.

5. The Delhi High Court on 08 Jul (Thursday) told the Centre it was free to take action against Twitter Inc in case of any breach of the new IT Rules and that no interim protection was granted, even as the new IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said those who live and work in India will have to abide by the rules of the country.

6. PM Modi interacted with Directors of Centrally-funded technical institutions through video conferencing on 08 Jul (Thursday). Newly-appointed Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan also joined the interaction.

7. Andhra Pradesh Chief minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy on 08 Jul (Thursday) inaugurated Rythu Bharosa Kendram (RBKs) at 74 Udegolam in Rayadurgam mandal in the Anantapur district to offer services to farmers at their doorstep.

Union cabinet expansion: Who is Anupriya Patel, one of the seven women who took oath? : She is the national president of Apna Dal (S) & currently serving her second term as a member of the Lok Sabha from Uttar Pradesh’s Mirzapur. Patel’s party is currently in alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Now she is the current Minister of state in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

9. Veteran Congress leader and six-time chief minister Virbhadra Singh passed away at on 08 Jul at IGMC after a three-month long battle with Covid illness. He was 87. The state government of Himachal has declared a three day mourning as a mark of respect to the former CM. 

10. Shri Virbhadra's body has been kept at his home in Holly Lodge in the lower Jakhu area of Shimla for the public to pay their last respects. The cremation will take place at his native place Rampur on Saturday.

11. The Defence Ministry has implemented SPARSH, an integrated system for automation of sanction and disbursement of defence pension. The two largest banks dealing with defence pensioners - State Bank of India and Punjab National Bank have been co-opted as Service Centres.

12. Two people were reportedly killed and many injured, after assailants opened fire at a crowd near the Bada Hindu Rao hospital in Delhi on 08 Jul (Thursday). According to sources, the assailants fired at least 20-25 rounds and the incident took place at around 9:45 pm.

13. Five militants were killed over 24 hours in Pulwama and Kulgam districts of Jammu and Kashmir, Inspector General of Police of the Kashmir zone Vijay Kumar said.

14. The Army foiled a major infiltration bid on 08 Jul (Thursday) along the LoC in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri as they eliminated two Pakistani terrorists in the fierce gun battle.

15. Chief of Army Staff Gen M M Naravane on 08 Jul (Thursday) met his Italian counterpart Lt Gen Pietro Serino and defence minister Lorenzo Guerini in Rome and held extensive talks focusing on strengthening bilateral defence cooperation, including military-to-military engagement.

16. Indian Army will conduct a recruitment rally at Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth, Rahuri, Ahmednagar from September 7 to 23 for selection of Soldier General Duty, Soldier Tradesman (10th pass), Soldier Tradesman (8th pass), Soldier Technical, Soldier Technical (Aviation/ Ammunition examiner), Soldier Nursing Assistant or Nursing Assistant Veterinary. The rally will be held for candidates from Ahmednagar, Beed, Latur, Osmanabad, Pune and Solapur districts. Online registration for the recruitment will begin on July 9.  **Why crushed stones kept alongside rail tracks?** 🚆🚂

The crushed stones are what is known as ballast. Their purpose is to hold the wooden cross ties in place, which in turn hold the rails in place. Due to weather conditions & sun heat, tracks will get expansion & contraction, ground movement and vibration, precipitation buildup from rough weather, and weed and plant growth from underneath, so alignment of tracks get changed and rails couldn't move forward. 

Due to Laying of concrete and its sharp edges of the stone make it difficult for wooden logs layed under track to avoid slide over each other; thus effectively locking them in place.

The ballast distributes the load of the ties (which, in turn, bear the load of the train on the track, held by clips) across the foundation, allows for ground movement, thermal expansion and weight variance, allows rain and snow to drain through the track, and inhibit the growth of weeds and vegetation that would quickly take over the track.

 **Story of Triyambkeshwar Jyotrilinga**  

Trimbakeshwar Shiva Temple is an ancient Hindu temple in the town of Trimbak, in the Trimbakeshwar tehsil in the Nashik District of Maharashtra. The origin of the sacred Godavari river is near Trimbak.

This jyotirlinga is swayambhu and huge.This jyotirlinga does not have pindi in the middle but it has a hole in the middle and inside the hole there are three pindies of Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh symbolically. This linga always possess water, no body knows it's origin.

Legend Behind Trimbakeshwar Temple

Legend goes that a sage name Gautam Muni resided on the Brahmagiri hill with his wife Ahilya. By virtue of his devotion, the sage received from Varuna, a bottomless pit from which he received an inexhaustible supply of grains and food. The other rishis, jealous of his fortune, arranged for a cow to enter his granary and caused it to die as Gowtam Rishi attempted to ward it off with a bunch of Darbha grass.

Gautam Rishi, therefore, worshipped Lord Shiva to bring the Ganga down to his hermitage to purify the premises. Pleased with devotion, Shiva requested Ganga to flow down and make Sage Gautam pure. After that Ganga flowed down. Lord Shiva told Ganga to stay there eternally for the good of everyone. All the Gods started singing the praises of Gautam Rishi, Ganga and Lord Shiva. On the request of all the Gods, Lord Shiva resided by the river Gautami by the name Trimbakeshwar (one of the Jyotirlingas). Hindus believe that Trimbak Jyotirlinga is one, which fulfills everyone’s desires. It emancipates all from their sins and miseries.

Godavari River also referred to as River Gautami after the name of the Sage Gautama is one of the four rivers which are believed to be bestowed with the divine nectar, Amrit and thus its banks become the hosting ground for Kumbha Mela. Its presence adds to the charm of the holy town just as the simple natural beauty characteristic of hills and mountains of Brahmagiri and Gangadwar that surround it.
