Durov is spending a lot of money. Why?

About money: people don't understand what a "fucking huge amount of money" is.

According to last year estimates, if Durov is going to spend only HALF of his pocket money on telegram servers, AND never get any kind of monetisation, AND never rent server space, for example, he can easily support if for 15-20 years. Just with his "pocket money". (Meanwhile try to imaging how would / could you spend $3-5 per month, if you don't need a room full of gold toilets)

And i think we all can agree that in this period (15-20 years) he can find some way to deal with monetisation.

(i think @TelegramDonate was just a test, they could have it in the side menu or something like wikipedia if they really wanted to)

About why:

Long time ago he was raided by the government, and he understood he couldn't really tell anything important to his brother or other people without having his message read by the govs (safe messengers weren't really marketed as they are right now - even complete lamers, i think, have already heard terms like "encription", "man-in-the-middle" etc)

After he lost / had to sell his part in VK and left the country, he had a lot of money, nothing to do and the idea, basically, "I want a popular messenger - so many people would have it - that can also be used in cases like that, when you have problems with officials"
