After the corona crisis: Now we would rather talk to the psychologist online | BT Society - www.bt.dk »There were many who before the corona pandemic had the view that it would create distance because you could not notice each other online. But under the corona, we have seen that you can do that well, and that learning continues. ”This is what the head of concept and health development at Danica Pension, Camilla Thind Sunesen, says. The statement comes in the wake of new data from the pension company, which shows that the share of online psychological help now, for the first time ever, exceeds the share of physical psychological help. Before the coronavirus hit Denmark in 2020, Danica Pension's share of online psychologist hours in 2020 was less than five percent in relation to physical consultations. But by the beginning of 2022, for the first time, the share of online psychological help will be half of all psychological help. The trend continues long after the corona has stopped keeping people at home, the pension company reports. “It is a development that is accelerated with huge speed. We have removed some of the worries that people may have, "says Camilla Thind Sunesen. One of the reasons why more people seek help online may be that for many it is easier logistically to hold a consultation online because they save transport time. At the same time, they can start the conversation within a short time at a flexible time of day. By comparison, there can be over 12 weeks of waiting time for a psychologist if one is referred through the public system. Even severe cases such as people with social anxiety and PTSD can, according to Camilla Thind Sunesen, benefit more from sitting at home in front of a screen because they do not have to go out among other people to get to the psychologist. It can in itself create difficult emotions. If you are a customer of Danica Pension with access to an online health package, you do not need to make an injury report or have been referred by your own doctor to be allowed to book an interview with a psychologist. It has probably also contributed to the growing interest among customers. “For many, it is a big deal to report an injury or ask a doctor for a referral. But when you can book online, you get rid of that barrier. It is not as 'dangerous' as asking to see a psychologist physically, "says Camilla Thind Sunesen. The pension company, which has around 800,000 customers, also experiences that, for the same reason, people who are having a hard time are caught much earlier and thus can avoid sick leave from work to a greater extent. However, Camilla Thind Sunesen also acknowledges that not everyone benefits from an online psychologist interview compared to the physical interview. “Some may experience a sense of distance, and of course you have to be aware of that. If the psychologist does not get that feeling quite quickly, it can create a restraint for the client. And then there are those for whom the technical can be difficult, "she says. Finally, it can also be more difficult for the psychologist to read body language. On the other hand, the therapist becomes more aware of what the client is saying: "They experience that the sense of hearing is sharpened, and this can offset what is lost in body language," she says. B.T. has tried in vain to get a comment on the trend from the Danish Psychologists Association. What is your home worth?
