Nearly half of all adults zzzzzover badly - and the problem is on the rise | India | DR More people sleep poorly and referrals for sleep disorders increase. But our expectations for what good sleep is are also too high, says a sleep doctor. The sun's rays hit the pillow, the birds chirp and you open your eyes. Completely groggy, heavy in the head and with dark circles under the eyes. You have slept badly. Many of us do this once in a while. Worrying many, says chief physician Poul Jennum, who is head of the Danish Center for Sleep Disorders. In fact, just under half of all adults report that they have been bothered by or within 14 days, shows, which is a completely new report on Danes' health .Sleep difficulty is a marker that something else is wrong.Poul Jennum, Chief Physician, head of the Danish Center for Sleep DisordersFor 15 percent of the adult, these are 'very annoying'. And that's more than ever. In 2010, 10.2 percent of the adults reported major inconveniences due to poor sleep in connection with the National Health Profile. And that increase is both quite significant and therefore also quite worrying, says chief physician Poul Jennum. is a signal that our health in general is not doing too well. is often a marker for other problems - especially mental, such as stress or depression - but also physical.Poul Jennum is particularly concerned that there are many young people who experience poor sleep. He would like to see a closer look at why. He himself sees a connection with the fact that a number of changes have taken place in our life pattern. The screen and the social take up more space - even just before bedtime - more people eat too unhealthily and too little. And it affects sleep, he says. Do you have control over what gives good and bad sleep? But there is also another problem that makes more people experience that they sleep too badly, says Poul Jennum. Our expectation of what constitutes good sleep has simply grown out of proportion.- It is a mistake to think you should sleep from the time you lay your head on the pillow until the next morning to have slept well. It virtually does not exist. And if you have expectations of it, then you can only be disappointed. That disappointment can in itself give poor sleep, but sometimes we simply also think that we sleep worse than we actually do, explains Poul Jennum. The solution is on on the one hand a change in our lifestyle, says Poul Jennum.- You get good sleep by living healthy. On the other hand, we must recognize that we all sleep poorly once in a while.- It is actually a sign of health that we reacts emotionally and, for example, loses sleep if we lie and ponder when life tightens. However, this does not mean we should ignore those who persist, he elaborates. And while more people experience, there are also more who seek treatment for sleep disorders. In any case, the Center for Sleep Disorders will refer more people for examination. - We will only refer those with the most severe sleep diseases. Those who have sleep apnea or severe narcolepsy among others. And yet we see an increase there. In five years, the number of people referred to the sleep center has increased from just over 2,400 a year to over 3,000 a year, the figures from the Danish Center for Sleep Disorders show. Sleep apnea is the most common sleep disease. Doctors expect 300,000 to suffer from the disease, which means stopping breathing during sleep. The apnea can last 10-60 seconds and can easily occur more than 400 times in one night. Sleep apnea can occur or be exacerbated by obesity. It can cause problems such as daytime fatigue, mental disorders, irritability and reduced growth in children and also increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Narcolepsy is a brain disease that manifests itself, for example, by suddenly falling asleep or having dream-like sensations during the day. The disease is quite overlooked, but can have a huge impact on how one copes with a normal everyday life. Especially for young people, it can be difficult to manage an education if you have narcolepsy. Sources: Poul Jennum, Rigshospitalet's department for Brain and Nerve Examinations And it is important that actual sleep disorders are treated, says Poul Jennum. Because while both long-term and illnesses can cause, for example, learning difficulties and problems coping with everyday life with jobs and a social life - sleep disorders can also increase the risk of, for example, blood clots. It can be said that a good night's sleep starts when you stands up.Poul Jennum, chief physician, head of the Danish Center for Sleep DiseasesBut if you daydream about fixing yours with sleeping pills - then you should not have high hopes that it really helps, warns Poul Jennum.- Sleeping pills are symptom treatment. It can easily make you sleep, but not make you feel better. In the long term, you will not get less stress, a better job or more joy in everyday life from sleeping - if you do not also get to look at the underlying problem. Monday at 19.00 you can ask questions about sleep disorders to Poul Jennum, who heads the Danish Center for Sleep disorders. And to René Gervig Hansen, who has suffered a lot during so-called sleep paralysis. If you experience that you sleep poorly, it is important first and foremost to look at your sleep routines, says Poul Jennum. - You could say that a good night sleep starts when you get up. You should preferably get up and go to bed at about the same time every day. Exactly regular sleep routines also helped 43-year-old René Gervig Hansen to get rid of the sleep paralysis that was well and truly in the process of destroying all his, as he was in his twenties.Sleep paralysis is a condition in which one's brain becomes conscious in the middle of sleep, at the same time as one's body is paralyzed - and the dreams continue. A condition that made René Gervig Hansen ask himself: But when René Gervig Hansen experienced that the paralysis came when he was particularly stressed, he never went to the doctor with it. It is otherwise one, says Poul Jennum, that if one affects one's awake state for more than three months - then it's time to seek help. - If you have light but can cope with your everyday life both emotionally and physically, then there are usually not the big problems. If, on the other hand, your daily life is affected so that your function is affected, then it is a sign that the quality of sleep is so poor that you should talk to your doctor.
