Elsebeth Egholm was stricken with cancer: Only a year later did the downturn come | BT Celebrities - www.bt.dk If it had to be, it should be now. The switch to new territories. The crime queen Elsebeth Egholm has put the best-selling, dark crime stories on the shelf and has instead chosen to make room for the big, deep love stories in her new novel 'Den røde glente', which will be published on 5 May. "I am 60 years old, so if I had to develop in this direction, which I can feel pulling in me, then I would have to see to get started," says Elsebeth Egholm. ‘The Red Kite’ is about the teenage girlfriends Sally and Silas from Helgenæs, who meet again - 25 years and a gloomy incident later - and still feel a great connection with each other. »Here in Denmark, we do not talk so much about the great, all-consuming love. Great emotions are often wrapped up in humor and irony. And maybe we also think that we can actually do without each other, 'she says. Elsebeth Egholm was a young woman at the Jutland Conservatory of Music before she decided to study journalism and later became a writer. After a cancer a few years ago, she resumed playing the piano and now plays half an hour on her grand piano every day. The special connection that can occur when you meet each other early, Elsebeth Egholm knows from her parents who met each other when they were ten years old. But not from his personal love life. Privately, the crime queen pairs up with Jürgen Klahn, who is also a crime writer himself. They met at a crime fair in 2006 and she loves him and he loves her. But it is not in the all-consuming, intense way. ‘I wouldn’t be able to write if I loved in the same way as Sally and Silas in the book. Both Jürgen and I are probably a little more pragmatic. There is probably also a bit of jubilation about it, "she says, adding:" I want to have control over my own life and not be too deeply dependent on others. Therefore, it can also make me completely scared when I think about the fact that I am dependent on Jürgen in the way that I do not want to do without him in my life, "she says. Elsebeth Egholm's boyfriend Jürgen Klahn is also an author, so a lot of literature is talked about at the dining table at home. The book is written during the corona pandemic, and it has also left its mark on the story, where the main character Sally's husband dies of covid-19 after a skiing holiday. Elsebeth Egholm herself lost her mother in October 2020 in the middle of the pandemic with associated restrictions. “It was a very tough time. For a time, we were not allowed to visit my mother, who lived in a nursing home. Another period only outdoors for half an hour at a time. And there I remember that she cried every time time passed, "she says. Similarly, another experience has gained a place in ‘The Red Kite’. In the new novel, the main character Sally experiences that her best friend in the class has suddenly moved space, so she has no one to sit next to when she shows up after a summer vacation. Elsebeth Egholm has also tried this with her friend - that she suddenly changed places. Still, they continued to be best friends for the rest of their lives. Until she - quite suddenly - died of cancer in 2008. “We had followed each other for so long and therefore had a special, ingrained love for each other, so it was something of a streak in the bill to lose her. We were going to grow old together and had talked about moving in olde collective, and then she did not even reach the age of 50, "says Elsebeth Egholm about the tragedy. Elsebeth Egholm lives in Risskov with her boyfriend Jürgen Klahn and their dog Django. Elsebeth Egholm herself was also affected by cancer in 2015, when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. It went really well. She recovered and got through the crisis well. But after a year, she was hit by a downturn. She felt depressed and lost both the desire to write and the desire to live. “I think it was a delayed reaction to the course of the disease. After all, it is a great mental strain to get a life-threatening illness and have to undergo chemo. While it was going on, I was just busy with doctors and the like, so it only hit me a long time later, "says Elsebeth Egholm. After half a year, she got well again. And if she's learned any of the ups and downs of life, it's going to work out. “When you turn 60, it would be weird if you hadn’t tried to lose any of your girlfriends. Like a lot of women experience breast cancer, "she says.
