Show more Katja Mejborn He called and said he was from the bank. And from the Nets. And from the insurance company. And from the undertaker. And from the probate court. Every time he lied. His lie was nonetheless lucrative. It scored him millions. In early April, a 25-year-old man in the Copenhagen City Court was sentenced to six months unconditional imprisonment - an additional sentence to a previous sentence of three years - for data fraud. He confessed to the whole molevit, and that made his punishment a little milder. But the seriousness of the matter was not to be mistaken. As the judge said: His scam had cost an incredible number of vulnerable people an incredible amount of money. And by the way, this was not the first time he sat on the dock in such a case. The young man is among the criminals who have opened their eyes to data fraud. They have figured out how to cheat especially older people. And in their own words, the police are downright "skilled" at it. Bünyamin Ilgóy, as the newly convicted man is called, must be said to have had a talent for deception. In the just-concluded case, he confessed to having defrauded a total of 56 people. Throughout most of 2020, he had called them and told them he was from the undertaker or probate court. Next, he asked most of them to pay a fictitious bill. Other times, he lured their personal information out of them. In any case, he managed to get money transferred to accounts that he had at his disposal. And then he got mules to raise the money or transfer them to cover his tracks. In this way, he raised more than 2.3 million kroner. Another 30 times he tried but failed with the method. And 160 times people did not pick up the phone. In court, the young man himself explained that these were boy scams that had developed into serious economic crime. And that he had started because he was on his ass. When the verdict was handed down, it had only been almost a year since he had last sat on the dock. In April 2021, he was also in court in a fraud case. Here he also pleaded guilty. And here, too, the list of victims was long and the amount significant. In about six months, he had embezzled 2.3 million kroner by convincing his victims that he was from the bank, Nets, the insurance company or the like. 33 people were robbed of their money along the way. 48 he did not manage to get money out of - either because they saw through his scam, did not have money in the account or something else. 43 times people did not pick up the phone when he called. The sentence was three years in prison, which he is serving. The court also emphasized here the number of victims, the number of attempts, the amount and the fact that he was also convicted of fraud in 2017 and 2018. Then, however, with somewhat lower penalties. Bünyamin Ilgóy is far from alone. In the case in which he himself has just been convicted, another young man is also charged. His case, however, is running separately. In addition, the Copenhagen Police have recently charged four young men with defrauding their victims by pretending to be from the bank. Other perpetrators are still at large. Common to most of them is that they are young, eloquent men. And many of the victims have in common that they are not quite young anymore. Their names are, for example, Gudrun, Inge and Else. And they have - according to the police - a much greater trust in authorities than the younger generations. “What they are good at is engaging in a conversation with the older people. Somehow, they often managed to talk them out of their mouths to create credibility. "" They are very manipulative. In fact, they are cold and cynical. They only have one goal, and that is to get the elderly to transfer money or confiscate their credit cards, «Peter Høholt, deputy police inspector at the Department of Economic Crime at the Copenhagen Police, has previously told B.T. He and his colleague of the same title, Peter Reisz, report that the scam is often very organized. "The criminals have found that it is easy to commit crime online and that there is a lower risk of being detected when hiding behind a screen," the latter said. Therefore, they also warn against giving out your personal information or transferring money to people you do not know. Whether they say they are from the bank, Nets, the insurance company, the undertaker, the probate court or the like.
