A beautiful and beautiful City of London. London is the capital of England and Great Britain, and is the largest metropolitan area in the United Kingdom. Located along the River Thames, London has been a major settlement for two millennia since its founding by the Romans in the 1st century as Londinium. The center of ancient London, the City of 𝙇𝙊𝙉𝘿𝙊𝙉, still largely retains its medieval boundaries. Since the 19th century, the name London has also been used to describe the metropolis that developed around this centre.[10] This conurbation of urban areas eventually formed the London Region and the Greater London administrative area. London has four World Heritage Sites, namely: the Tower of London; Kew Botanical Gardens; a historical site complex consisting of the Palace of Westminster, Westminster Abbey and the Church of St. Margaret; and the historic settlement of Greenwich (where the Royal Observatory marks the prime meridian, 0° longitude, and GMT). Other notable London landmarks include Buckingham Palace, London Eye, St Paul's Cathedral, Piccadilly Circus, Tower Bridge, Wembley Stadium, London Bridge and Trafalgar Square. London is also home to a variety of museums, galleries, libraries, sporting events and other cultural institutions, including the British Museum, National Maritime Museum, British Library, National Gallery, Tate Modern, Wimbledon and 40 West End Theatres. The London Underground is the oldest underground rail network in the world, and the second largest after the Shanghai Metro.
